The Greenlight Project
Introduction
The Greenlight Platform is a comprehensive survey and data management tool that powers The Greenlight Movement—a collaborative network of over 140 non-profits, social enterprises, and businesses. Together, they work to measure, understand, and evidence social and development impact within communities across Africa, with the ultimate goal of improving quality of life throughout the continent.
As the Greenlight Platform has expanded exponentially to accommodate various new clients and businesses, this rapid growth has significantly impacted employee productivity and platform efficiency, creating an urgent need for improved user experience across all touch-points.
They approached us for a comprehensive UX redesign of their entire system, including their survey-capture application, admin website, and client relationship management platform.
The Problem
The Greenlight Platform was experiencing critical usability issues, including laggy displays and slow response times that made simple tasks frustratingly time-consuming.
The platform suffered from poor information architecture and cluttered layouts that made essential functions difficult to locate and use, forcing employees and clients to waste valuable time searching for basic features.
These usability problems created a cascade of negative impacts that severely hampered staff efficiency, ultimately impeding the important social impact work these organisations were trying to accomplish across Africa.
The Strategy
We gathered data from over 50 employees across different organisational roles, examining their daily workflows, pain points, and feature requirements. This research helped us understand both internal and external user needs and expectations, ensuring our design decisions would improve internal productivity and client satisfaction.
Developed a comprehensive design token library and enhanced component system ready to scale across the platform's diverse functionality, creating consistency and efficiency throughout the user experience.
The Solution
Rather than pursuing a costly complete system rebuild that would disrupt operations, we implemented a strategic design system modernisation approach that preserved familiar workflows while dramatically improving the user experience.
Our solution focused on deconstructing the existing interface architecture and rebuilding core components using modern UX principles, ensuring users could leverage their existing knowledge while benefiting from contemporary design standards.
We implemented accessibility compliance through WCAG guidelines to support users with diverse needs, whilst focusing on performance optimisation by streamlining interface elements to improve loading times and system responsiveness.
The Impact
The redesigned GreenLight Office platform delivered remarkable improvements across all key success indicators, with exceptional adoption rates recorded across all three test groups during our pilot phase.
We reduced task completion times and eliminated the friction that had been hampering daily operations. The enhanced information architecture improved productivity, and user adoption exceeded all expectations. The new decluttered layout is now enabling staff to focus on their tasks effectively.
This project proves that thoughtful UX/UI design can transform non-profit operations, showing how strategic interface design serves as essential infrastructure for organisations working to create positive social impact.
